Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department Launches New Internet Safety Program for Parents and Children

Verizon Grant Funds Program to Be Offered at Sheriffs 14 YouthActivity League Centers

LOS ANGELES, June 9 /PRNewswire/ --Los Angeles County SheriffDepartment detectives from the Special Victims Unit have launched anInternet safety program for children and parents, thanks to apartnership with Verizon.

Approximately 80 parents attended a ceremony on Saturday (June 6)at the Sheriffs Compton Youth Activity League to launch the program.At the event, the Sheriffs Department hosted the first Awareness isPowerInternet Safety course, and Verizon presented a check for$41,000 to support the program.

It is an honor to partner with Verizon to establish this Internetsafety program, Sheriff Lee Baca said. This program will givechildren and their parents the tools they need to have a safe andsecure Internet experience while exploring the limitlesspossibilities of the digital world.

The Awareness is PowerInternet Safety program will be availableat the Sheriff Departments 14 Youth Activity League centersthroughout the county and will serve approximately 4,500 childrenand adults. Two courses, one geared for children and the other foradults and parents, have been developed. Curriculum topics willinclude social networking sites, chat rooms, parental controls, e-mail, text messaging, legal downloading and financial Internetsafety.

In addition, to help manage their childrens Internet experiences,Verizon is making it easier for parents to find and access theonline parental controls and resources for customers of the companysonline, FiOS TV and wireless services. The enhanced Web site,www.verizon.net/parentalcontrol, gives parents using VerizonWireless, Verizon FiOS TV and any of Verizons high-speed Internetservices the ability to make decisions about their familieswireless, TV and online use.
