NSW:L Plater in high speed police chase
SYDNEY, Aug 21 AAP - A 16-year-old learner driver has allegedly led police on a high
speed pursuit through southwest Sydney that ended with the car catching fire.
Police stopped the Holden Astra at Revesby about 1.15am (AEST) on Sunday after checks
revealed its registration had expired.
The 16-year-old boy driver was issued with a court attendance notice for a number of
traffic-related offences and his learner-driver permit was suspended on the spot.
But less than an hour later, police allegedly saw the same car being driven through Revesby.
The driver failed to stop and police gave chase, allegedly reaching speeds of up to 150km/h.
The pursuit ended when the car headed up the Hume Highway ramp and its engine caught fire.
The boy, from Auburn, was arrested and charged with several offences, including driving
on a suspended licence, reckless driving, speeding and driving an uninsured and unregistered
vehicle.
He was refused bail and will appear before Parramatta Local Court on Sunday.
Fire and Rescue NSW were called to the ramp to extinguish the blaze.
